Integration of Managed Aquifer Recharge into the Water Supply System in the Algarve Region, Portugal

چکیده
The Algarve region of Portugal is experiencing severe water scarcity with existing supplies insufficient to meet demand, limited resilience drought. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) can provide intermediate storage and bridge the gap between availability success depending on available capacity accept store water. We present results a regional study quantifying both these aspects estimate potential for MAR. Our demonstrate that MAR comprise 10% total demand (24 Mm3/yr) using not otherwise captured, quality meets requirements Groundwater Directive. replace 15 Mm3/yr surface used in public irrigation perimeters 9 be develop maintain strategic groundwater resource aquifers Central Algarve. Although climate change predicted result an 8–13% decrease recharge, this addressed by incrementally increasing design capacity. has similar benefits planned major infrastructure projects (desalination River Guadiana abstraction), reduced environmental impacts lower costs than almost all feasible alternatives. conclude important measure increase supply security drought region.

Economics of Managed Aquifer Recharge
Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) technologies can provide a variety of water resources management benefits by increasing the volume of stored water and improving water quality through natural aquifer treatment processes. Implementation of MAR is often hampered by the absence of a clear economic case for the investment to construct and operate the systems. Economic feasibility can be evaluated usi...

Policy and Economics of Managed Aquifer Recharge and Water Banking
Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and water banking are of increasing importance to water resources management. MAR can be used to buffer against drought and changing or variable climate, as well as provide water to meet demand growth, by making use of excess surface water supplies and recycled waters. Along with hydrologic and geologic considerations, economic and policy analyses are essential to...

Mobilization of arsenic and other trace metal contaminants during managed aquifer recharge (MAR) poses a challenge to maintaining local groundwater quality and to ensuring the viability of aquifer storage and recovery techniques. Arsenic release from sediments into solution has occurred during purified recycled water recharge of shallow aquifers within Orange County, CA. Accordingly, we examine...
